Who are the Peer Mentors?

By the SVCC Student Peer Mentors

Over the past few semesters, you may have seen flyers for a Peer Mentor open house, study group, or even come upon the Peer Mentor booth during Sauk Fest and heard about drop-in hours. You might have stopped and asked yourself, who are the Peer Mentors? What is the purpose of this program?

The SVCC Peer Mentors are available to students during our drop-in hours three times a week in room 2M9B providing a space for students to come and talk, study, do some destressing activities, or even just hang out. One of the events recently hosted have been our monthly open houses including different games, activities, and snacks. We have also tried to hear students’ concerns and struggles about classes and hosted a Biology study group this past month to share studying techniques and provide a comfortable space for students to get together and study.

The purpose of this program was to provide a safe space for students in a safe area surrounded by their own peers. We know that sometimes you do not always want to talk to an adult and it may be easier to have a conversation and even rant about your bad day or week to someone experiencing the same things as you. Our Peer Mentors are trained and certified in mental health first aide and have so many good tips and tricks for handling stress and even for studying!

Peer Mentor Kenzie Sissons explains “I want to be part of an organization that works to promote selfcare and mental health awareness.”

Peer Mentor Mads Allen says “I want to help others with their struggles with school or mental health or get more experience in the realm of mental health.”

Peer Mentor Madison Vicks says “I enjoy helping others and am passionate about improving our societies mental health.”

The Peer Mentors will be hosting another open house the week before finals on Wednesday November 30 from 11:30 – 1:00 and 3:00 – 4:30 in room 2M9B. This time is for all students to come and enjoy the claiming area accompanied by hot chocolate, tea, destressing activities, and music while you study for finals.
